Tips for accurate home readings
- Sit quietly for five minutes with your back supported and feet flat on the floor.
- Rest your arm on a table at heart level and use a cuff that fits your upper arm.
- Avoid caffeine, exercise and smoking for 30 minutes before measuring.
- Take two readings a minute apart, morning and evening, and record both.
Understanding the categories
The categories used here follow the American Heart Association: normal is below 120/80; elevated is 120-129 systolic with diastolic below 80; stage 1 high blood pressure is 130-139 systolic or 80-89 diastolic; stage 2 is 140 or higher systolic or 90 or higher diastolic. A reading above 180/120 is a hypertensive crisis. Only your health care professional can diagnose high blood pressure.
